In March 1893, B.P. Topper and his two brothers move to McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, to learn the cigar trade.

The founding year printed on B.P. Topper’s 1921 letterhead, which Chris found and purchased in 2023.

With about 20 rollers averaging 70 years of age and the loss of Cuban tobacco after the embargo, the family turns to machine production through F.X. Smith in Pennsylvania. Topper cigars remain all tobacco.

After four years outside the industry, Chris joins his father Frank in 1994, becoming the fourth generation in the family business.

The June 1997 issue of Cigar Connecticut Monthly remembers Frank Topper, 1929–1997. His son Chris carries the family business into its fourth generation.

The traditional Topper line returns to hand production in the Dominican Republic.

Topper 1894 marks 130 years of the family business. The 1921 letterhead inspires its packaging, while Pennsylvania-grown Habano wrapper and Dominican-grown Broadleaf-seed filler reinterpret the family’s original blend.

For generations, Topper used the date 1896. In spring 2023, a friend sent Chris a link to a letter written by his great-grandfather in March 1921.
Chris bought the letter and matched its signature to the one preserved on the family’s anniversary box. Above the ornate letterhead were the words “Established 1894.” His research also placed B.P. and his brothers in McSherrystown in March 1893, learning the cigar trade.
In 2024, Topper announced the earlier founding date and introduced Topper 1894 to celebrate 130 years of the family business.
