The Topper family moves to McSherrystown, Pennsylvania, to learn cigar making, according to local records described by Chris Topper.
The founding year now recognized by Topper, following the rediscovery of a 1921 company letter.
Frank expands the sales operation in Connecticut. An aging workforce and the loss of Cuban tobacco contribute to the Pennsylvania factory’s closure and the shift to machine production.
After four years working outside the industry, the fourth generation enters the family business.
The traditional Topper line returns to hand production in the Dominican Republic.
The new Topper 1894 line marks 130 years of the family business.

For generations, Topper used the date 1896. Then Chris found a letter written by his great-grandfather in 1921. The letterhead read “Established 1894.”
He checked the signature against the one preserved on the family’s anniversary box. The letterhead identified 1894 as the founding year.
In 2024, Topper announced the earlier founding date and introduced Topper 1894 to celebrate its 130th anniversary.
